PATRIOTIC WOMEN.

MANAWATU EXECUTIVE. The Mayoress (Mrs A. E. Mansford) presided over a meeting of the executive of the Patriotic Women’s Committee yesterday afternoon. Also present were the chairwomen of subcommittees, Mesdames G. C. Petersen (Lady Galway Guild), K. S. Manning (wool and hussil's branch), S. G. Northey (parcels branch), C. King (Silver Thimble Fund), and E. C. Barnett (shop branch), also Mrs W. H. Galbraith (secretary). Mrs Galbraith presented the financial statement, which showed that funds received to February 28 totalled £3185 2s 6d and the total contribution to the Heart-to-Heart Appeal through the committee amounted to £1370 16s 9d.

Mrs Barnett presented the shop committee’s report, which stated that work was progressing satisfactorily; the roster was arranged up to the second week in May. Mrs S. J. Parkcs had been elected a committee member. Mrs McMurray had recovered ftom her illness and was again acting as secretary. It was recommended that £2OO be paid over to the Heart-to-Heart Appeal. Mrs King reported that some valuable and interesting articles had been received by tho Silver Thimble Fund. These would be raffled at the shop this month and others sold and melted down for the funds. The appeal would close this month. Mrs Northey reported that Mrs L. Cooper and Mrs L. Speochlcy had been appointed to the parcels branch executive and the resignation of Mrs C. Morgan, who had moved to Podding, was received with regret. Members agreed to offer to help at the A.N.A. Club. Seventy-seven parcels were packed during the month, making a total of 563. Mrs Morgan i 3 to receive a letter of thanks for her services. Mrs Maiming reported that tho knitting and hussifs branch now had tho co-operation of the Salvation Army Women’s League, tire Baptist Women's Guild, and tho staff of Dale’s to help with knitting. The distribution of articles to local men in the overseas forces was being continued and during last week 122 articles were given out in this way. l'our' large eases wore despatched at tho end of -February, including polo jumpers for minesweepers, balaclavas, skull caps, hussil's, mittens and scarves. There was plenty- of wool on hand. Mrs Manning paid a tribute to Mrs Woodham for her assistance. Mrs Petersen reported that Miss Dorian had been appointed to fill the vacancy on •the committee of tho Lady Galway Guild caused through Mrs H. C. Ilowcs taking over the duties, of secretary. The town clerk had acknowledged the receipt at Wellington of five cases of clothing. Mrs Mansford commended the work of the sub-committccs and thanked them. . , The shop committee’s recommendation that £2OO be paid to tho Heart-to-Heart Appeal was amended to £3OO at the request of the I-Icart-to-Heart Committee, and approved: The parcels committee offered to -take-charge of the shop at intervals rather than make a separate appeal to the public,. and also to stand ready to fill any gap in servicing tho shop, the offer was accepted and Mrs Mansford said that the first call on the funds would always bo for. soldiers’ parcels. It had been decided that all money-raising efforts of branches be made through the shop. Arrangements were approved for exhibiting some of the articles collected by the Silver Thimble Fund.. The following donations were acknowledged by the sub-committees: Parcels branch: Miss I. M. Smith, 2s 6d; Mrs W. Cook, £5; “Friend,” per Mr K. Collinson, £2 30s; “Friend,” per Mrs N. Phillips, 16s; Miss V. Eagle, £1; Mrs Astin, 10s. Te Arakura Women’s Institute, 15 parcels; Mesdames Bracoy, G. McLennan, Marshall, Clark, Ross, Barnett, Moulton Dempsey, G. Guy, Sylva, W. Scarr, Blenkiron. K. Dalzell, D. F. Smillie, Plnnmer, Hasloch, Nesbit, senr., A. Nesbit, Garner, Misses Lloyd, J. Seyell, J. Chapman, biscuits. A competition for a tin of tea, donated by Mrs McMillan, raised £7. Knitting and hussifs: Kairanga Women’s Institute, six pullovers; St. Paul’s Guide Company, peggy square quilt; schools, five p°ggy square quilts (lined by Mrs Jackson) ; Anon., two. girls’ linen frocks, two knitted frocks, coat, pilcher and pullover; Mesdames Jackson, five cardigans and jumpers, five pairs boys trousers (fiom used wool); Akers, 5 pairs mittens, scarf, and pair socks; A. K. Crombie, socks for minesweepers, 3 scarves, 6 pairs - socks. Children’s clothes were handed over to the Lady Galway Guild. Lady Galway Guild: Arts and crafts circle, Townswomen’s Guild, work sent in and work at rooms each week; knitting hussifs branch, five peggy square quilts, baby knitting and cardigans; Mrs Harris (Fitzherbert West), boys' trousers, girls’ frocks, bed quilt; N.W., flannel; Mesdames W. L. A. Chapman, quilt, flannel, singlet; M. Lee, clothing; jR. ITarker and E. F. Bee, £4 (bridge evening); Pacey, Stevens, Mr K. Collinson, various goods; visiting artists, 2s; Glen Oroua Institute, peggy square, quilt, coat; girls of Terrace End School, hand-made quilt, dry cleaning companies, Palmerston North Hospital laundry staff, cleaning and washing.
