THE HOME GUARD

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Your correspondent “South Battalion,” who complains at being asked to contribute to the cost ot petrol for the full day’s outing which we are all looking forward t>o as part of our tactical training need worry no further. 1 would not have him miss the manoeuvres lor worlds so have paid the sum required, namely, sixpence, to the Battalion Commander, to cover the cost of transport. No doubt some other guardsman, stirred by ray example, ufid in a spirit of sacrifice,' will also assist by providing him with lunch and carrying it for him on the march. Your correspondent should not overlook the fact that Homo Guard training is entirely voluntary and that no ono is forced to attend parades against his will. Those of us who are keen and realise the necessity of training recognise that others are putting in far more time than two hours twice a week, and we are quite prepared to attend the necessary parades without question. At the present time the only advantage that would accrue from compulsory training and placing the Home Guard under military control would be to prevent a repetition of the childish complaints voiced by your correspondent in his letter.—-I am. etc..

ENJOYING THE EXERCISE Palmerston North, 14/3/41.
