WIN AND PLACE.

BETTING AT AWAPUNI

TROTTING CLUB’S ATTITUDE.

The attitude of the Manawatu Racing Club toward the use of the win and place system of betting for the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting on the Awapuni course was discussed at the annual meeting of the ’trotting Club, last evening. Mr A. W. Yortt asked what had happened about the Trotting Club’s intention, as recorded in the minutes of the last annual meeting, to have win and place betting. i The secretary (Mr A. H. Manson) explained that the club had made arrangements for win and place betting, but at the request of the Manawatu Racing Club single pool betting had been continued.

Mr Yortt said that the Trotting Club appreciated what the Racing Club had done for it, but he thought the subject should be pursued. Mr J. Batchelar said that the Trotting Club was in the unfortunate position of not having its own track. If it had tried to insist on the win and place system the Racing Club might have told it to get its own track, and that would ,be another matter.

Air Alanson said that it might be possible to obtain permission for the win and place system again. Owners and trainers wanted in any case. s Air C. P. Nash mentioned that he understood it would cost £16,000 to alter the Racing Chib's electric machine to the win and place system. The latter- club could not be expected to alter the machine at present. It had had its hard times too.

It was decided .to recommend to the committee that it use its best endeavours to have the win and place system put in force for the club’s next meeting.
