WORK AT AWAPUNI

PREPARATIONS FOR FOXTON.

The course proper was opon for galloping at, Awapuni this morning, the flags being in the middle. Rain fell overnight, and continued in showers, so that the going wa6 inclined to be soft. Numerous horses with engagements at the Foxton meeting were given their final gallops, and there was a fait amount of work, although not a great deal of it was outstanding. Silver Shekel and Nevybury Queen galloped half a mile, taking 54scc. Sceptre covered a mile alone, taking 1.54. Colonel Bogey and Old Surrey took a similar time. Old Surrey was in front at. the start, but Colonel Bogey went ahead in the concluding stages a.nd finished two or three lengths in advance. Squeers covered seven furlongs alone, the last six taking 1.27.

Raeburn and Brazil wore companions over a mile, which was covered in 1.52 3-5. Brazil had slightly the better of it. Raeburn has not been racing too kindly of late. Sandy Bay and Saint Tor finished together in a three furlongs gallop, taking 41scc. Cherry Bay galloped alone over three Jurlongs. Sir Rabbi and Inform had a seven furlongs task. Sir Rabbi was well clear at the finish. Inform again stopping. 'lho distance took 1.45 4-5. Members of J. J. Waller’s Ram to be given early gallops included Gaelic Song, Aurora’s Star. Nigger Boy, Social Credit, Tetratina and Santa Lucia. Later, Hunting Royal, Sleeveless and Anita Foe were worked. .

Several youngsters' were given .barrier practice. Bronwcn. who was formerly trained at Takanini, has entered C. W. New’s stable, and races in the same colours as Don Quox. It is intended at present to prepare her for the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. Work on the new stccp’echase course at Awapuni is progressing at. a good rate Ihe ground should soon be ready for grass seed. Riding Engagements. Tattersall: Sweet Anne, Gaelic Song, Sceptre. 11. Stewart: Courting, Beau C’oureur. G. B. Goulsbro: Sanction, Rustem. C. Bowry: Last Acre, Fly-by Night. A. Midwood : Blue Border. P. Atkins: Sigloiv. A. Jonkins: Good Sun. It. Buckne.l : Wakarara. F. Boyer: Royal Vision. W. J. Mudford : Sporting Gift, City Song, Triple Crown, Master Lackham, Taurangi. 11. J. Callahan: Red Chief, Hunting Cat. R. Marsh : Thorana.

Laughing Prince Dead. The death occurred recently at Mr T. A. Duncan’s stud at llunterville of Laughing Prince, one of the most brilliant gallopers the Dominion has seen. Laughing Prince was foaled’in 1924, and his early successes included the Avondale Nursery Handicap and A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, when ho was owned by Mr W. J. Jorgensen. He was then purchased by Mr Duncan for 1200 guineas on the eve of the Wellington - summer meeting in 1927, going on to win the Pacific Handicap two days later. His subsequent successes included the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui for four years in succession, the Mitchelson Cup, the G'. G. Stead Memorial, Feilding Stakes (dead-heat with Inflation), the Avondale Guineas and the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap. At the stud he left some useful performers.
