AUTO SWEEP AT MARTON.

NEW ZEALAND CUP CANDIDATE

There was merit in Autoswcop’s win at Marlon on Saturday, although it was something of a surprise. It was his second success this season, as he had previously won at the Combined Hunt meeting at New Plymouth, but his solitary . success before that was a win as a four-year-old in a hack distance event at Bulls two years ago. Auto Sweep was the only winner among several New Zealand Cup horses engaged at the Marlon meeting. He has become more solid and robust during the last few months and is bred on good slaying lines, being by Captain Bunsby —Crubeen. Unlikely Starter.

Mazir is unlikely to staft in the Poland Cup at the Ohinemuri meeting on Saturday.

KaAibella Working Well.' Kathbclla is working well at Hastings and on a recent morning was hard held over three furlongs run in 40scc. She is in excellent order for a spring campaign. Hoad Work Far Royal Star 11.

Royal Star II was given a course of road work after the Wanganui meeting but has now returned to the tracks. He will probably race at Stratford next month and then at Trentham. Notium Not Impressive.

Nothin) made a good start as a jumper but has not been impressive of late. Schooling over six furlongs at Ilawcra on a recent morning he stopped badly at the jumps. He may, however, do better in company. t

Black Robe Fails. Black Eobu, one of the best two-year-old fillies last season, gave a satisfactory performance at Awapuni in her first appearance as a three-year-old, being second to Mittie. She was made win favourite at the Marton mooting, but although in the first halt-dozen out at the start, did not atterwards take a prominent part in the race. L/odble Winner.

Ail Night, who wor. each day at the Geraldine meeting, is a well-grown four-year-oTu gelding by Jxigliuy —Clovane, who is by Night Raid, had his racing career ended by the development of trouble in his respiratory organs. All Night was second at the Grand National meeting this season and before that bad had only one race. Royal Minstrel’s Death.

Royal Minstrel raced in the Flying Handicap at Marton on Saturday and had to be eased after three furlongs through treating a blood vessel. Veterinary aid was secured but the gelding died the same night. A seven-year "chestnut horse by Nigger Minstrel—Charlady. Royal Minstrel had not had much success of late, having won only once in the last two seasons, while ho secured two minor placings. ,
