(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 24

At the September meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute two new members were elected, and interesting letters were read from Mrs J. Jamieson now resident in Wainui-o-Mata (Wellington) and from Private Crimrod, of Levin, expressing appreciation of a parcel received from the institute. This was one of the first parcels sent and it was pleasing to _ receive, word that the goods had all arrived in excellent condition. The sum of £8 was handed in by the card party organisers (Mesdames S.-Pedersen and R Andrew) and they with their small but energetic committee were heartily thanked for (lie work they are doing for the institute _ in this way. In recognition of many kindnesses in sending flowers to members in hospital Mrs Easton presented Mrs Radford with a shoulder spray; a small presentation was made to Mrs Angus who leaves shortly to reside in Marton. “Though only 18 months in the district Mrs Angus has been one of our most willing workers,” said Mrs Easton, “and we are very sorry to lose her, but trust that she will bo able to join in the institute activities in Marton and have many happy days.” The bloom competition resulted: Mrs Andrew 1, Mrs Third 2, Mrs J. Murray 3; ginger nuts ' Mrs Tremowan 1, Mrs Bell 2, Mrs Wilkins 3. f The institute quota of five Christmas parcels is to be sent this weekend the gingernuts in the competition arc to be included. Next month a demonstration on re-covering an eiderdown quilt is to be given. There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Tennis Club, Mr F. Thurston presiding. '. The president said the last season promised to bo a very successful one, but owing to unfavourable weather the inter-club and association matches had to be postponed. They had lost the services of the captain (Mr Price) and the secretary (Miss .A. Moynihan) who had loft the district. The club finances were in a satisfactory condition, the present balance in hand being £27 10s 6d. Officers elected were: President, Mr .F. Thurston; vice-presidents, Messrs J. T. Bovis, E. T. Moody, M. O’Reilly; secretary, and treasurer, Mr A. Wright; club captain, Mr C. G. Mitchell; vice club captain, Mr E. Edmunds; committee. Mosdames 11. Pope, V. Pope, W. .Easton, Messrs. N. Norris, N. Balt, and C. Booker; auditor, Mr B. J. Brann; selection committee, captain, vice-captain, secretary and Mrs V. .Pope. It was resolved to discontinue affiliation with the centrp.
