CANARY AND CAGE BIRD NOTES.

Often budgerigar owners of one pair of birds are disappointed because the birds show no signs of nesting. A whole season has often been allowed to pass, the owner all the time hoping. Normally healthy birds nest within 10 days of being mated. Failure to mate within this time, or at least a fortnight, should be regarded as suspicious and a reason should be sought. The birds may he infertile (or one of them). They may need the sight of other breeding birds to encourage them. Probably the nest box is not suitable, or the birds may be too old. There is a reason, and expert advice should bo called in. Budgerigars, unlike canaries, need no nesting materials. A concave bottom to the nest, quite bare, is all that is required. Never use any bird, canary or budgerigar, as a breeder unless it is fully 12 months old, and not even then if the bird shows any signs of not being fully matured. Budgerigars with known feather trouble should never bo used.
