SENTENCE COMMUTED.

THE WAIHI CRIME

(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. The Executive Council met to-day, the Governor-General presiding, when the death sentence passed on Douglas Herbert Cartman was considered. Cartman was convicted eight weeks ago of murder at Waihi. The Executive Council’s decision is that the death sentence be commuted to imprisonment for life. It is understood the reports indicate that prisoner is of less than normal mentality, though lie could not be regarded as insane.
