EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AUGUST 26, 1910.
The annexation of Korea by Japan was to bo proclaimed on September 13, stated a London cablegram. A thousand pounds’ worth of English watches and scientific apparatus had boon stolen from the Anglo-Japanesc Exhibition. Three premises—a grocer’s, a photographer’s, and a sewing machine company’s shops—in Main Street West had been gutted by fire. The most serious damago had been clone in the photograph shop. There were approximately 23,792,947 sheep in New Zealand at the end of April, an increase of 312,240 over tho same period in 1909. The Wellington-West Coast region headed the list with 5,780,206 and was closely followed by Napier-Gisbornc. Tho Palmerston North High School had beaten Napier High School by 39 points to 3 in the annual fixture for the Poison Banner. i
