WELLINGTON BEAT MANAWATU. MARGIN OF THREE GOALS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 26. Though Wellington beat Manawatu 4 —l in a representative men’s hockey match at Ivarori Park on Saturday, the form shown/by the home team Avas not such as to excite high hopes lor their success in next Saturday’s match. They will have to show greatly improved teamivork if they are to beat Auckland. Wellington iverc sJoav oil’ the mark. Manawatu opened Avitli several clean open passing movements, one of which culminated in H. Laivry scoring. The ground Avas in fairly good order, but soft with the previous night’s rain, and after a short time became increasingly greasy. As a result tho stickwork of both teams avqs brighter in the early phases than later in the game. Wellington soon shoAved up in a series of hard attacks, mostly individual. but characterised by the excellent folio wing-up and supporting of the forAvards by the halves. It. Neate played a hard and vigorous game, and Avas outstanding throughout. Wcilum and Russell also showed up. Neate opened the scoring tor Wellington with a smart shot from a scuffle in tho circle, and soon afterward Wei lain took a centring pass from the Aving and slammed it into'the net. Wellington Avere thus leading by a goal at half-time. From then on Wellington s superioiity became increasingly evident, but a number of hard attacks broke on tho sound defensive play of M. Byers, the Manawatu full-back, and L. klart, t'hcir All Black goalkeeper. J. Beales and H. Lawry, in trie forwards, and I. Davey, at half-back, Avere their outstanding players. . Russell shot a narroAV-angle goal from close in to the net early in the second half. Then taking the ball from nearly half-Avay in a brilliant solo run, Neate tricked Byers and carried the ball into the circle.
