WOMEN’S WORLD

(By “Nanette.”)

•Mr and Mrs J. W. Adams, of Christchurch, are spending a holiday in Palmerston North. Mrs II.: Scott and Miss Eunice Scott, of Fitzherberfc Avenue, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned north on Saturday night.

Prior to entering upon the programme, presented by Miss 1). SoutheyEakcr and Mr E. Jenner, and arranged by the ‘ Palmerston North branch of the British Music Society, on Saturday night, Dr F. H. AlcDowall (chairman of the branch), explained that it had been hoped this year to have presented All' Jenner and the hate Miss ! Ava Symons in a sonata recital, as had been done in Taranaki last season This had been prevented by the sad passing of Miss Symons, to t'he great loss of her personal friends and those who knew her through her music. Mr Jenner had subsequently inquired whether a local violinist could bo found with whom he could play, and the branch had at once chosen Miss Southey-Baker, of whose work the city was so proud. It was announced by the Wellington Competitions Society on Saturday that the Wellington Symphony Orchestra had indicated its intention to present a silver cup, to be known as the Ava Symons Memorial Cup, for competition at next year’s festival. The cun is for the violin section of the programme in which there has been only one class this year, violin solo, 12-id yea re, own selection. Miss Symons was leader of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra and died this year while the Centennial musical festival orchestra, in which she was one of the first violins, was touring New Zealand. This will be the second cup presented bv the orchestra for competition at the Wellington competitions, pianists having already competed for the Madame Evelyn de Mauny Cup. presented in memory of the wife of the conductor.
