The death is reported from Vichy, in unoccupied France, of M. Edouard Michel in, the tyre manufacturer, aged 84 Mr A. S. Watt, of the Federal Department of External Affairs, has been appointed first secretary of the Australian Legation at Washington, states a Sydney cablegram. Aged 38, Mr Watt was a Rhodes Scholar in 1921. Mr J. E. Menzies, of Wellington, assistant Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, visited Palmerston North to-day and • addressed the weekly luncheon of the Rotary Club. Mr Menzies, who is an elder brother of the Australian Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Menzies), interviewed various businessmen this afternoon. He will stay here to-night and after visiting Massey College to-morrow morning will return to Wellington.
