THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 18, 1909. Mr C. Morse’s Te Arai had won the Wellington Steeplechase. On leaving the Bluff for Melbourne the Maheno had touched a reef. An examination at Melbourne had shown damage estimated at £2OOO. It had been reported that an Australian had decided to accept Whelch’s challenge for a sculling match on the Manawatu River, but his identity had not been disclosed. The race was being arranged by Mr S. Messena, of Foxton.

Ngauruhoe was again reported to be showing great activity.
