JUNIOR RUGBY. AYoodvillo Rugby juniors scored a well-deserved win on tlie home ground on Saturday, when they defeated Feilding Old Roys, after a hardfought game, by 9 points to 6. Their success was largely due to the fact that the local fonvaids had the advantage in the loose. The teams were: Woodville.—Bolton, Ansin, AleNcil, Skittrup, Hutchins. Nckctai, Russell, .Malcolm, Collins, Birehall, Stewart, Giles. .McDavitt, Bryson, Burlacc. Feilding Old Boys.— Boaster, Pulford, Walker. Wilson, Hurdle, Slewart. Dewe, Chcotham, Hills, C’raine, Hancock, Raven. Matson, Fawel, Benzor. The Feilding hacks soon swung into action, and canned play to Woodville’s twenty-five, but it was quickly transferred to the visitors’ territory. From Iho free kick inside half-way Aivmu’s attempt at. goal failed. Ryle, with a good kick into the home twenty-five, kepi Woodville in their own territory for a spell. Ragged play around halfway followed. In the subsequent play, ihe Woodville forwards, headed by Bryson and Burlacc, were very active. Hutchins and Skitrrup carried play over the visitors’ line, but a forcedown resulted. T'lie visitors were looking the ball but faulty handling among the hacks spoilt many promising movements. The visiting forwards carried play down to their opponents’ line, where Hills scored. Boazer’s kick, from a bandy position, failed, fit the succeeding stages McDavitt and Burlace wore making the host of opportunities for the home team. From a scrum in the visitors’ twenty-five, the local hacks swung into action, but Nckctai hung on too long. From a scrum in Feilding's twenty-five. McNeil cut in nicely io seqro well out. Auxin's effort to convert went wide. Hutchins’s kicking was a feature, and he did good service lor his side. From a line-out the ball passed to McNeil, who essayed a drop-kick. but. tlie ball did not rise. Hutchins and McNeil were again conspicuous in some smart movements. In the concluding stages, play travelled to and fro in Feilding territory. The final score was Woodville 9. Feilding Old Boys 0. The necessity of preparedness in the Dominion in the event of the Empire being embroiled in another war was the theme of speeches made at (he annual reunion of tlie Woodville R.S.A.. held on Saturday evening. T'he president (M r CL 11. Wiokes) was in the chair.

The loyal toast was dulv honoured. In proposing the toast of' ‘'the Permanent forces and the Territorial forces," Mr 1.. Gardner (Palmerston North) declared that both had had a lean rime, and desired all honour. The gravity of the international situation and the outlook in the Pacific, were stressed as lie referred to possible enemies, and illustrated his remarks concerning tin' Pacific witlr the aid of a map. The speaker, on behalf of the Defence League, made a strong plea lor trained territorial forces in this country, and deplored the fact that there had not been a greater response to the Prime Minister's recent recruiting appeal. Mr Gardner dealt, with the position of New Zealand in the event of an attack, and he also drew lessons from the Great War. Lieutenant R. I). L. Irwin, in responding. endorsed Mr Gardner's views regarding strategic points and the mobilisation of trained men. Air Geo. Afenzies, secretary of the Hawke's Bay R.S.A.. and vice-presi-dent of the Defence League, Napier, responded to the toast of tho "N.Z. R.5.A.." proposed by the chairman. He paid a compliment to the Dominion conference of the association upon Ihe manner in which the business was transacted. He urged that the R.S.A. badge be worn more. Supporting the appeal for an army of trained men. be cited the ease of certain countries where conscription has been in vogue for many years, and which proved a formidable barrier to a would-be invader. He expressed appreciation of the visit paid by representatives of the AVoodvillo branch to the Napier reunion. The toast of “The AVoodvillo R.S.A.” was proposed by the Mayor (Afr R. R. Johnston), who congratulated ihe branch on its progress during tho past year. Tho association was proving an inspiration in the appeal for recruits, and its members were fine citizens, worthy of the best that could he done for the association. The Alayor expressed the gratitude of the Centennial Afemorinl Committee to the association for its donation of firm gunieas. The secretary of the branch (Air F. D. Alaekie). in replying, stated that that body had strengthened its position numerically and financially but would welcome many more enrolments. “Kindred Associations” was proposed bv Afr D. S. Broughton, the toast being connlcd with flic names of Captain D. I lonoro (officer commanding “N” Squadron. Legion of Frontiersmen. and also representing the R.S.A., Palmerslon North): and Alessrs Af. Murphy and R. Sinclair (AVairoa). Captain Honorc complimented the president upon the splendid programme. He regretted that counter attractions had precluded a larger attendance. The Frontiersmen included inanv old “Diggers” ami all wore co-operating in the call for preparedness. Amongst tin' Frontiersmen and .a good member. too—was flic Mayor ol AVoodvillo. The legion had offered its services to the Mayor of Palmerston North, and in various ways was aiding the recruiting movement. Alessrs ATurnliy and T. Lee (Alastcrton) also spoke. Other toasts were: —“Absent Comrades.” proposed by Captain Honorc and drunk in silence: “Visitors and Entertainers,” “The Press,” and “The chairman.” Instrumental selecrtions were supplied by .Messrs C. Bell (Palmerston. North) and H. Brooker, whilst Air R. Algar (Taikorea) the possessor <d a line Ivriione voice, was a popular vocalist. Air J. Charles led the company in the singing of “Digger"

songs. There was a. representative gathering, visitors being present from a number of branches, and the president was complimented upon the success of the gathering.
