OPERATIVES SCARCE
AUCKLAND FACTORIES. FREE FARES AND MEALS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June S. A suggestion that the adult apprenticeship sc-huiiHi should he extenued to women, which would permit the employment ot workers with a subsidy on wages, has been made to the Government from Auckland. It is stated that such a scheme would permit, the employment of women whom otherwise it would be uneconomical to employ. Roth the boot and the clothing .industries are prepared to train girls. One firm has been investigating the question of recruiting girls from provincial towns and also that of establishing a learners’ workroom away from the actual factory. One group oi manufacturers has proposed to the Government that it should institute a subsidy scheme whereby young girls would be brought to Auckland to learn machine work and would receive a subsidy for their board and lodging. It is perhaps significant of the general situation that one clothing firm with modern premises now pays the fares for the travelling of its female employees to and from the factory in "weeks where no overtime payments have been secured. Furthermore, it provides a Dot mid-day meal 'free for its female workers in its own cafeteria.
