FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

BRITISH DEBATE CONTINUED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 19. Continuing the debate in the House of Commons to-day on foreign affairs, Mr Winston Churchill said ho was unable to understand tho objection to making an agreement with Russia in the broad and simple form they had proposed. £< l do not see what is wrong with an alliance to resist further aggression. Why shrink from becoming an allv of Russia now when by tho verv fact it may prevent war?” Mr Churchill said lie did not believe Roland was the obstacle. He added that Nazi subjection of Lithuania, Lativia or Esthonia would afreet Roland but it would not affect the extension’ of Britain’s risks to apply the guarantee to them because ’we aic up to the neck in it Already.” Mr Anthony Eden said he wished to seo a tripartite alliance among England, Franco and Russia, based on complete reciprocity, applicable to the whole of Europe and supplemented by compulsory national service in Britain. Mr R. A. Butler, winding up the debate, repudiated the idea that Turkey would not move a man or a ship in the Mediterranean without Russian agreement. A tripartite military alliance would be a big departure in British policy and consequently the Government was approaching the matter with caution and allowing proper time for consideration. The Liberal amendment to reduce the Foreign Office vote was defeated by 220 votes to 96. Tho debate was concluded.
