CUTTING OF KAURIS

APPREHENSION FELT. NORTHLAND PROTEST. Per Press Association. WHANGAKEI, May 22. The Foresty Department’s announced intention to adopt a planned marketing scheme whereby it would take 1,500,000 board feet ol timber from the .State forests during the 1938-40 period and thereafter make an intensive survey of the whole of the kauri forests and overeut areas has aroused keen opposition in Northland, where a strong movement is being made to secure the preservation ot the remaining kauri trees. A largely attended conference of local bodies and representative people was held in the Omahuta Forest on Saturday and passed resolutions requesting the Government to cease all cutting operations until , the people of the Northland are given ample opportunity of discussing the future of our kauri with the Minister concerned: to urge on the Government- the advisability of establishing a large fund for the purchase of desirable tracts of privately owned bush-covered areas in Northland; to urge the Government to consider remitting rates to owners of bush-covered land who are prepared to reserve it for scenic purposes; and also to obtain sound advice on the reafforestation of hillsides subject to slipping.
