In the first round of the Mnnawatu women’s competition, St. Paul’s were beaten by Broadway Blue, 3—o, and Broadway Gold beat H.S.O.G. easily by G goals to 0. In their match with Broadway Blue, St. Paul’s were unlucky on a number of occasions not to score, but the experience of the Broadway Blue players was the deciding factor. Mrs Rees and Miss Davis (2) were the scorers for Broadway Blue. M. Toy played a very sound game at lull-back, while Mrs Rees was strong on attack. Misses E. Bray and L. Cookslev were most prominent in the St. Paul’s team. The Broadway Gold-H.S.O.G. encounter was the best game of the day, but the score, 6-0, was no indication of the merits of tho teams. J. Hancox opened Broadway’s score from a good centre hit. Tho same player found the net again after good following up play. The Broudway score was further enhanced when Miss K. Scales gave Mrs Tucker no chance to save. MisS Davis and Miss M. McQueen each added goals for Broadway and a little later Miss Davis again netted. Just before the final whistle, H.S.O.G. bad their opportunity to goal when Miss H. Fleming centred perfectly, but through their forwards being over anxious, the victors wore able to clear. Messrs J. K. Paton and B. Palenski were tho umpires for both matches.
