FIRE HAVOC IN FORESTS.
CARELESS SCRUB-BURNING. Air A. Aforris .Tones mentioned at n. recent meeting ot flic executive of tho Forest and Bird Protection Society that careless burning: of fern and scrub laid epused much damage to native bush in various parts of Marlborough Sounds, particularly in the Lpwer Pclorus Valley. A farmer of the old type in that valley had told hunters to burn bracken wherever they pleased on his estate. . , Several members gave the opinion that the time had come for a strict strong control of scrub-burning, which frequently caused fire to spread far beyond the boundaries of the estates where it had started. It was decided to bring this matter under the notice of tho Netv Zealand Farmers’ Union.
