BASKETBALL.
SEALED HANDICAP TOURNEY. Eighteen teams participated in the opening games of tile Manawatu Basketball Association’s season, on .Saturday, when a sealed handicap tournament was played at the Technical School grounds. In spite of a keen wind the standard of play was higher than for last year’s opening tournament. The new rules were in operation and it was felt these made for faster and more open play. Bunnythorpe emerged the winners, their play on the day being remarkable; they won their games by substantial margins. The shooting*of the goal throwers was most accurate, Misses J. Clevely and T. Koehler being outstanding and their defence was also good, that of Miss It. Leask being particularly so. At the close of play Miss C. Vautier, president of the Manawatu Basketball Association, who bad managed the tournament very capably,- presented small trophies to the individual players and offered her congratulations to the winners and runners-up on their fine play. The tournament was decided on sectional play, run on yankee tournament lines, points in which were gained as follow:

Section C.—Bnnnythorpe 8, Ashhurst 5, Wha.karongo B 4, Takaro A 3, High School C 0. Section D. —AVhakarongo A 6, High School B 2. Y.W.C.A. white 2, H.S.O.G. A 2. Semi-finals. —Lihertylanr] beat Knitex. Bnnnythorpe beat Whakarongo A. Final. —Bnnnythorpe beat Libertylantl. The referees were AUs A. Frith, Misses I. Stuart, C. Yautier, J. Clevelv, L. Bobertson, B. Mason, M. Sheppard, T. Sexton, M. Beavis, AT. Morgan R. Leask, O. Sinclair, E. Skinner, S. Young and F. Eglinton.
