EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD” MAY 22, 1909. The English Derby was won by the King’s horse Minoru. It was advertised that, a St. John Ambulance class in first-aid was to be commenced in Palmerston North. Work had been commenced in the observatory section of tho Square in cutting out the stunted scrub and trees that had been growing there in order that tho new plan might be put into operation and the site transferred into a beauty spot. Messrs L. Stansell, McCarthy, Henley, Carpenter, Lowe, Weston and Pike were appointed to canvass for members for the Palmerston North branch of the Dominion Scout Corps. The Moutoa Drainage Board had spent £2387 on drainage, works to date.
