PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. With the object of paying a tribute to the Highland Pipe Band for their success at the contest held a short time ago in Christchurch, a social gathering was held on Saturday evening by the Manawatu Scottish Society. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford) were guests, as also were the honorary members of the band. A welcome was given by the chief (Mr J. S. Jenkinson). Mr Mansford said the citizens of Palmerston North would join with him in extending congratulations and good wishes to the band on their achievement. Highland regiments and bands were very popular ihrougho it tbe Empire, not so much for their striking uniforms as for the traditions behind them. The history of Scotland was studded with the deeds of the regiments and bands, and their attributes of determination and courage were characteristics which would mase any nation great. The local band yas living up to these high traditions, (me had only to appreciate what they had accomplished since their inception T o realise that. He had heard a concert given by the band before its departure for the south and had been very favourably impressed. He hoped the band would win the A grade championship at the next contest. The individual members of the band then received silver medals at the hands of the Mayor, while tho drummajor and pipe major, Messrs Peterana and Nicholson, were given gold medals. The Timaru Cup for the B grade championship, the Alisdair McDonald Cup for the highest points m music in the quickstep, and the Manawatu Slieid for the music in the test selection were handed over. A company has donated a handsome cup, which was on view, although it has not yet been assigned to any section. Mr Jenkinson thanked the Mayor, who was accorded musical honours and cheers. Dorothy McLean presented Mesdames Mansford and Jenkinson with bouquets. The chief said that Mr V. M. Rowlands, the drill instructor, had been responsible for evolving tho movement which had gained the band the highest marks in either the A or B grade sections and which had elicited favourable comment. Mr Rowlands replied, stating that it had been a great pleasure to him to work for the band. Jtoins were presented as follow: M rs Pearce, Miss Thomson and Mr Thomson (vocal solos), Dorothy McLean and Nola Cooper (seantriubbias) Nola Cooper (sword dance and fling), Nola Cooper, Dorothy McLean, Yvonne Dalby and Jean Simpson (reel o’Tulloch). Miss Thomson was at the piano and Mr J. Cooper played the pipes for the national dances. Items were announced by Mr A. McDonald. Mr Thomson conducted a community singing session. Mr 4V. Allen thanked the performers, after which dancin<* was enjoyed, Mr Matliesori being the M.C.
