BRITAIN’S HUGE PRODUCTION

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon), introducing the Bill increasing from the present limit of £400,000,000 to £800,000,000 the amount which may be borrowed for defence for the five-year period ending March, 1943, 6aid that the current year’s defence expenditure would be £406,000,000.
The Chancellor added that production had reached a scale never previously touched and it would be in full blast in 1939-40. The cost would be £580,000,000.
During three years, £700,000,000 would be provided from the revenue, said Sir John. The navy personnel from 1933 to 1938 had increased by 32,000.
