WOOLWORTHS (VICTORIA) LTD
Plans for a considerable extension in 1939 of the present chain of stores in Victoria have been made, by the directors of Woolworths (Victoria), Ltd. It is hoped that five more brandies will be opened, during the year, bringing the total in operation to 17. Originally the company possessed only one store in Bourke Street, but after the business of Alfred Edments Ptv., Ltd., was purchased in 1936, there were nine branches in the chain. All the ordinary capital of £OO-007 is held by the parents company, Woolworths Ltd., Sydney, so that direct investment interest in Victoria is limited to 80,000 7 per cent, preference shares. Business has improved rapidly in recent years, assisted partly by advances from the parent company. The profit for 193 S was £24,874. compared with £10,426 in 1937 and £14.341 in the preceding year. The ordinary dividend was 20 per cent, last year and 10 per cent, in 1937.
