OBITUARY.
MR G. T. SCALES. The recent death, as the result of an accident, of Mr George Thomas Scales, removes one of the city's most popular young sportsmen. Deceased, who was a soil of Mrs and the late Mr T. W. Seaies, was born in Dannevirke 22 years ago and was educated at the Dannevirke North School and later at the Terrace End School and the Palmerston North Technical School, on the removal of the family to this city. He associated himself with the grocery trade in 1932 and was held in high regard by his employers and all who came ill touch with his business activities. He was a member of the executive of the Wellington Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants and rendered signal service.
In the realm of sport the late Mr Scales was particularly prominent. An active member of tlie Kia Ton Cricket Club, he was an enthusiastic and promising player, while he was also an honorary member of the Kia Toa Football Club. A keen exponent of indoor bowling, he was the youngest member of the association to win the Da wick Ferns. Hockey was his favourite sport, however, and lie was a prominent member of the Broadway Club, which he joined in 1933. He led the senior B team to victory in the championship last season, and was a member of the organisation committee. He took an active part in organising the United team in the summer hockey competition.
Besides his mother, 1 the late Mr Scales is survived by a brother (Mr R. Scales) and a sister (Miss K. Scales). The large attendance at the funeral testified to the popularity of the deceased young man. There were numerous wreaths, including tributes from the organisations to which he belonged.
