BRITAIN AND JAPAN.
' BREACHES OF TREATY. RETALIATION POSSIBLE. LONDON, Feb. 2. If Japan disregards the Note that was sent to her by the British Government this week, refusing to recognise any modification of the NinePower Pact, plans for retaliatory action against her may be put into force. A statement to this effect is made by the political correspondent of the Daily Express. The writer says the plans for retaliatory action have already . been drafted. They provide, it is believed, for the total prohibition of the importation of certain Japanese goods into England and tho imposition of heavy duties on other goods. Legislation which would be introduced would apply to the non-self-governing colonics, and the Dominions might take parallel action. The Daily Mail says:—“This Note means business. It was shown to representatives of the United States and French Governments before it was sent, and they are likely to co-operate if retaliatory measures are taken, or if Japan continues to play her role of being polite but deaf.”
