STRONG COMMENT.
PROFESSIONALS IN SPORT. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Sept. 3. “I challenge anyone to prove to me that professional cycling and running are clean and straight-out contests. The matter is all cut and dried among the competitors before they come to Ashburton. All the competitors have a finger in the pie about who is going to win. That is why I have come to the conclusion that it is time the professional element was eliminated from galas.” This statement was made by Mr W. K. Waters at a public meeting held to arrange a Labour Day gala in aid of beautifying funds. This was the climax to a controversy of long standing regarding the inclusion of professional sports in the programme on the ground that they absorbed too much of the profits. The galas had been steadily slipping back in the public estimation, mainly on account of dissension over the holding of sports at the function. In 15 years the galas have raised over £SOOO for the Advance Ashburton Association, which has spent'it all in beautifying the town.
