AMERICAN STRIKE.

INJURY TO BUSINESS. OAKLAND (California)', Dec. 8. The City Council has voted for an appeal to President Roosevelt to intervene in the shipping strike and bring about a settlement. The resolution cites the great injury ,to business and industry resulting from tho strike. Mr H. Bridges, leader of the strikers, in an address to 20,000 at a mass meeting, said: “Australian lines pay better wages than American ones. They give stewards an eight-hour day, and other groups cash for overtime, which we are demanding.”
