Mr Alexander Salmond, M.A. (N.Z.), B.A. (Cantab.), of Queenstown, a licentiate of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, is to be called to the Karori charge. Mr 11. J. Eoss, who has been headmaster at the Levin District High School for 14 years and who retires at the close of the current term, was presented with a chiming clock at a valedictory gathering this week.

At the monthly meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board, to-day, a motion of condolence was passed with Mr J. D. Aitchison, a member of the board, whose father, Mr J. Aitchison, of Martinborough, passed away recently.

The death took place at Carterton this morning of Mr Humphrey Callister, aged 99 years and 9 months, states a Press Association message. He was born in the Isle of Man on March 9, 1837, and came to New Zealand when 22 years of age. He went immediately to Carterton and took up a bush section. and had remained ever since. He was the first man in the Wairarapa to grow wheat, and was instrumental in establishing the first school, the first Methodist church, and the cheese factory. His wife predeceased him in March, 1923. He leaves a family of five sons and five daughters, two sons and a daughter having predeceased him. The degree of doctor of philosophy for research in mathematical physics has been awarded to Mr J. W. Harding, M.Sc., formerly of Wellington, by the University of Cambridge, according to advice received from England. Dr. Harding was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College, where lie graduated master of science in 1929 with first-class honours, and won a University of New Zealand post-graduate scholarship in science. On this lie studied for two years under the noted New Zealandborn scientist, Lord Rutherford of Nelson, director of the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. Dr. Harding was then appointed lecturer in mathematical physics at the Imperial College of Science, where he is at present.
