RED MANFRED WELL.

GALLOPING ATTRACTIVELY. COMMENT ON WOODVILLE HORSES. (By "JMoturoa.") Judging'by his attractive gallop over six furlongs on Saturday morning the. Manfred—Red Shank gelding, Red Manfred, will bo found in excellent heart for his engagement in the Bolton Handicap at Woodville on Thursday. In this race ho should make a splendid showing, despite the opposition expected from the Derby colt Mnrtara. Red Manfred has taken longer than usual to reach his top form this season, but there is evidence that ho has made a steady improvement of late. Ho was prominent into tho straight in the W.R.C. Handicap in October, and the second day ran a good third to Gay Boy and Davolo in tho Watkins Handicap. Ho disappointed, however, by his showing ill tho Hareourt Stakes on the concluding day of the meeting Anywhere near his best Red Manfred, who has 9.3, would experience little difficulty in accounting for his opponents on Thursday. His form at tho meeting, howover, will be closely watched in view of his summer programme, which includes the Auckland meeting. Red Manfred has always shown his best form at Ellorslie, where he has included among his successes the King's Plate, Derby, St. Leger, and A.R.C. Easter Handicap (in which bo carried 8.2 and equalled the New Zealand record of 1.36 3-5). In Form. Form followers will be unwise to overlook the good recent performances of Pakanui. The Hunting Song gelding was produced only twice at the N.Z. Cup meeting, winning the Criterion Handicap easily with 8.1 and running a fair race in t'ho C.J.(J. Handicap. Pakanui has had time to freshen up again and such a speedy galloper will have to be seriously considered in the Oeto Handicap. Obscure Maidens

Backers will not have a great deal to guide them in their deliberations in the .Maiden Stakes on the first day, for, of tho 23 acceptors, only Perfect Laly and Sunny Blonde have been placed this season. However, several of the remainder have shown signs at recent meetings of being on the up grade. Derby Trial. The winning of two novice events ana a buck race in succession does not make Martara a champion, but tho Martarma colt is favoured by his cunnneclions as a Derby prospect, and for that reason more than usual interest centres in_ his appearance in open company at Woodville this week. Unless Martara can win with his 31b under w.f.a. on Thursday it would be lolly to lake him to Ellorslie. Rival for Trench Fight. On form one of tho hardest horses Trench Fight will be called upon to meet at Ellersho on New Year's Day in the Derby will bo Mandamus, a three-imartei brother in blood to the New Zealand St. Leger winner, Spiral. Mandamus, wno was purchased for 600gns, is by Limond lrom the Absurd mure Drastic, and in his last start be won the Otaio Plato from Willie Win and a good field in the smart time of 2.6, the track being dead. Mandamus is bred to run a 6obd mile and a half anil there is evidence in his track work that he has trained on nicely since ho last raced.

Silver Ring's Chances. There appears to bo every possibility thai Silver Ring will stand up to bis Auckland Cup preparation, for ho has made steady progress since a minor operation was pcrtorined on him to take away the pus in his foot, which was the cause of his chronic soreness in Australia. A class horse when right and a winner over all distances, Silver Ring cannot fail to make great appeal in the Auckland Cup, in which lie has 9.4, or 21b under w.t.a It Silver Ring starts ho may wind up the actual first selection of tho public. Promising Maiden. Among die promising maidens ongaged in the Trial Handicap at Woodville is tfio Gaiuscourt three-year-old Rotoina, who will be suited by the roomy course. Rotoma has started only twice, running third to Lord Quick and Alloa ul Masterton, and second to Mittie at Levin, coming from last in the latter event. By tno Gainsborough horse Gaiuscourt, Rotoma is bred from the Xo. 3 family mure Black Lake (dam of Kalos and Llyn. Dim), by All Black from Blue River, by Merriwee from Blue Water, by St. Leger, and tracing back to Amethyst. This is a good staying family which has produced Uupidon, Cuneitorm, Bluefire, Peircno, Money Peer, and other good winners. Rotoma's immediate future looks very bright.
