ACTION INTERRUPTED
A SYDNEY CASE. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, June 25. A libel action began on Tuesday in which the plaintiff, Percy Reginald Stephenson, publisher, is suing the Bulletin Newspaper Company, Ltd., to recover £SOOO in damages was interrupted to-day when Mr Justice Davidson discharged the jury arid postponed the hearing until the next jury sittings “owing to developments not connected with the conduct of the case.”
Plaintiff complains that tlie Bulletin published a hostile review of Clarence Crockett’s book, “Mezzo-Morto,” and, as a result, plaintiff’s publishing company was forced into liquidation. Plaintiff is also suing Brian Penton and Glauco Bombelli, alleging that t»ey conspired with the Bulletin company to libel him. Later in the day Mr Justice Maxell in chambers granted an application on behalf of Stephenson for an order nisi calling on the Consolidated Press, Ltd., publishers of the Daily Telegraph, and George Warnecke, journalist, to show cause why they should not be dealt with for contempt of Court. The order is returnable on July 28. Stephenson alleges that the Daily Telegraph published statements not contained in counsel’s opening address and calculated to prejudice the action, the Daily Telegraph’s statements having reference to prior proceedings.
