PLANS FOR ABYSSINIA. SETTLEMENT BY FARMERS. NON-COMPETITIVE PRODUCE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 27, 9.5 a.m. ROME, June 26. Ihe first zone of Abyssinia to be opened to colonists will be the territory around Addis Ababa, followed by Harar and Lake Tsana. Plane are being drawn up to provide that the settlers will not grow produce to compete with Italy, but wilt concentrate on coffee, cotton, wool, hides, sugar and grain. . Ihs first colonists will be organised in semi-military fashion, ready io use rifles wherever the need arises. Industrial workers will come later, but there is no intention of establishing industries convicting with the home country. Italian exports are being accorded a predominant place on Abyssinian markets by means of high tariffs against loreign goods. Plans are being drawn up to make Addis Ababa a model African town. A commission is being sent to Kenya and the Sudan to study agricultural methods.
Experts estimate that between onetliird and one-half of Abyssinia is unsuited for cultivation.
