THE ENGLISH TEAM

QUEENSLAND WELL BEATEN. BRISBANE, June 13. England beat Queensland by 19 points to 4 in a Rugby League game which, while not a brilliant spectacle, revealed the magnificent cover defence of the visitors and the consistency of Hodgson’s goal kicking, Queensland we-re quite unable to make any headway against tho defence, their few opportunities falling down through faulty handling. Brogden cut through close to a scrum to score England’s first try, which Hodgson converted. The “baby” of the team, Edwards, on the right wing, completed a brilliant move initiated by Brough when he jiicked up from a clever punt by Brogden and streaked for the line. Brough, who gave a masterly display at fullback, was again in the picture when he co-operated with Belshaw and Watkins to enable the winger, Smith, to score in the corner. Hodgson’s value to the side was shown by his five goals, three of which were from half-way. In the first half, play was rather disappointing, England apparently being anxious to test tho strength of the Queenslanders before giving anything way. With the score 11-4 in their favour at half-time, however, and Edwards’s try coming within a few minutes, they realised that they had the game in their hands .During the closing stages of play the visitors exploited open football with the three-quarters throwing -the hall about beautifully. Brough often chimed in, there being occasions when he was right in the forefront of movements only a few feet from the line. He proved to-day that ho is just as entertaining as Sullivan. Official figures show a gate ol £2492, with a crowd of 23,684. The teams were : England.—J. Brough, A. Edwards, A. J. llisman, W. Belshaw, S. Smith, S. Brogden, W. Watkins, M. Beverley, L. A. Troup, M. Hodgson, N. Si 1coek, T, Armitt, H. Woods. Queensland. —W. Smith. H. Robison, W. Mahon, J. Reardon, L. Hudson, V. Hey, F. Gilbert, P. Madsen, J. Little, W. Low, L. Beidke, W. Ryan, P. Hickey. Arkwright was chosen for the English team but had to drop out because a leg injury was still too sore for him to play.
