ASHHURST DEVIATION.

SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAL. FURTHER ACTION INTENDED. With the object of reducing the dis tance for motorists travelling between the East, and West Coasts, by making a deviation over the railway at Ash hurst and eliminating the detoui through the township, a move was recently initiated to have a deviation constructed. The matter was placed before the Oroua County Council, as the controlling authority, which declined to take any action. The Manawatu Automobile Association communicated with the Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay Associations on the subject, and at last evening’s meeting, of - the Manawatu Association’s committee replies were received from these organisations as interested parties. The Hawke’s Bay Association advised that it strongly apDroved of the plan and iioped that the work would be undertaken. The Wanganui Association, while stating that its executive was uncertain as to what it was desired to do, said it wished to know whether support was desired with regard to the overtures to the Oroua County or if it was simply desired to ascertain whether the Wanganui executive favoured the scheme.

Mr N. H- Mackie (chairman) suggested that if the Wanganui Association was prepared to take action in support in the manner of the Hawke’s Bay body, fresh overtures should bemade to the Oroua County Council to take the desired action. “I think we might reach some finalitv satisfactory to all parties,” he added. ‘‘The road would go right through as a highway and be a matter for the Highways Board.” It was decided to again communicate with the Wanganui Association and, on receipt of its advice, take further steps in the matter.
