PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, Sept. 27. A suggestion that an electric fire alarm system should be put into operation at Pahiatua was discussed at length by the quarterly meeting of the Fire Board yesterday. The chairman (Mr A. AV. AVhite) said that when Mr Girling Butcher, Inspector of Fire Brigades, visited Pahiatua recently and interviewed the speaker and the superintendent he suggested that an electric fire alarm system be instituted, in the borough with push buttons in various parts of the town. He recommended also that the fire bell be rung by electricity. He gave certain, information and suggested that estimates of the cost be obtained. Air AV. A. Parton asked why the inspector had made the suggestions. Superintendent A\ r . Lawry said that with the way the water supply was in Pahiatua row, in case of fire the efficiency of the brigade depended upon the quickness with which it arrived on .the scene. Mr Parton said he understood that at the last two fires the water supply was so good that the pump was not needed. The chairman said it looked as if the town was going to be in an uncertain position again this summer with regard to its water supply. The present well was not much good and the council was looking for a new well. Mr K. Alason asked what the water pressure was in an average summer. The superintendent: About 651bs. After further discussion Mr Parton said Air Butcher’s recommendations should be in writing before the meeting. He moved that the matter bo held over until a written recommendation is received from the Inspector of Fire Brigades. The motion was passed. In his report on the ensilage competition which was recently judged, Air S. Freeman, fields inspector for the Department of Agriculture, states: —‘ ‘There are very few entries for the competition this season, many farmers having found it necessary to ! use their silage during the dry summer. Eight entries are judged, seven of them being pits; as only one stack was judged, a separate class could not be made. The points allotted in the list below have a maximum of 100 points, as follow: Raw ! material 20, quality of silage 50,: minimum waste 30: —A.
