CONFIRMATION SERVICE.
ST. JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH
In simple language, Rt. Rev. Dr Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, gave a forceful address on “Courage” to the candidates at the Confirmation service at St. John’s Church last evening. Taking as his text words from the 27th Psalm, “Wait on the Lord, He shall strengthen Thy Heart,” the Bishop said that some 2000 or 3000 years ago thoughtful men had concluded, after a study of human affairs and human life, that there were four virtues which they accepted as cardinal —courage, temperance, wisdom and justice. Courage, said the Bishop, was perhaps the most important of all, for without it man could scarcely live up to the other three. Proceeding to give an examination of this virtue, the learned and venerable speaker pointed out that it did not mean recklessness which did not recognise danger, but a virtue which conquered fear. In other days this virtue was found chiefly on the field of battle and therefore was not looked for amongst women, but to-day it was a recognised quality of character for all. Even amongst people who appeared to be proof against weakness and cowardice, failures were sometimes reported. It was to guard against the possibility of failure that the Psalmist wrote the words “Wait on the Lord. He shall strengthen Thy Heart.” Simple and sincere prayer, urged the Bishop, was the lesson of the Psalm. There was a large congregation to hear the address and the service, which was the last Confirmation service of Bishop Sprott in Feilding.
