FUNCTION AT MAKINO.

PERSONAL,

IN AID OF HALL FUNDS.

The Makino Ping Pong Club organised a successful function at the Makino Hall on Wednesday evening, the object being to raise funds for additions to the hall. Cards were provided for non-dancers, while the younger set were entertained at ping pong, followed by a dance The card prizes were donated by Mr and Mrs P. R. Simpson, the first prizes being won by Mrs D. McGregor and Mr Thurston, while the sealed prizes went to Miss J. Stuart-Moray and Mr B. Thurston. Music for dancing was played by Messrs Austin, senr. and junr., and extras were contributed by Mrs Votier, Miss Stuart-Moray and Mr Strachan. Mr J. Lamberton occupied the position of M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mi’s W. Baker, junr., and the lucky Gay Gordons bv Mrs Peter Apel and Mr It. Ritchie. The winner of a competition for a lampshade, made and given to the hall committee by Mrs W. Baker, junr., was Mr R. Ritchie, of Makino. Miss V. Petersen and Mr Votier were the successful competitors in a ping pong tournament and Miss Jean Thurston and Mr Drummond McGregor were the runners-up. Mr lan Riley (club captain) presented the trophies to Miss Petersen and Mr Votier and congratulated them upon having won the tournament. On behalf of the hall committee, Mr W. P. Bickers at an opportune moment thanked Mrs W. Baker, junr., for the handsome lampshade she had given. Mr Bickers also mentioned the fact that his wife had donated a satin bedspread to be competed for to help raise funds for the hall, Mrs W. Kitchen', of Feildmg, having kindly assisted with the gift. VALEDICTORY. PRESENTATION TO DISTRICT NURSE. Sister Smith, district nurse, who lias been transferred to Palmerston North, was the guest of St, John’s Church choir and vestry at a social, gathering in the Parish' Hall on Thursday. A member of the choir for the past nine years, and a very valuable church worker, especially in connection with the Christmas tree. Nurse Smith will be greatly missed by members of the church. In making a presentation from the choir and vestry. Ven. Archdeacon Petrie referred to the loss which the church and Feilding would suffer by the transfer. The presentation comprised a handsomely bound copy of Hymns Ancient and Modern, which the recipient gratefully acknowledged. Musical items were contributed by Mrs Campbell, Miss E. M. Taylor, Miss J. Revere and Messrs E. A. Golding and G. J. Fitzpatrick. The petition from Feilding to the Palmerston North Hospital Board praying for the retention of Sister Smith as district nurse carries over 600 signatures. KITCHEN EVENING.

The approaching marriage of Miss Tv. Harford, of Feilding, to Mr R. Berg, also of Feilding, was marked by an enjoyable kitchen evening given on Thursday by Mrs A. V. Svendsen at her residence in Ivimbolton Road. Dainty decorations in spring blooms had been carried out in the drawingroom, where games and competitions were played. Prizes were won by Miss Harford, who tied with Miss Ann Page in a celebrity competition and won the draw, Air Svendsen who was successful in a bean competition, and Mis Innes Funnell and Mr C. Halpiii who won a honeymoon competition. Still another was won' by Miss Eileen Redwood, who contributed several elocutionary items that were much enjoyed. The opening of the parcels which Air Svendsen, on behalf of the guests, asked Miss Harford to accept, created much interest and their novel and useful contents were greatly appreciated by the recipient, who requested Mr Berg to express her thanks to those who had given them. It was after midnight when the party was brought to a close. Mrs Svendsen received her guests wearing a frock of navy' silk crepe finished with chromium buttons and Miss Harford was in a bright and attractive frock of flowered silk in blue and red toning trimmed with pleated frills.

Mr A. E. Pearce, of Waituna, is staying with his brother, Mr L. F. Pearce, Makino Road. Following an .extended visit to England and the Continent, Miss F. Conway, of Cheltenham, left London on Thursday to return to New Zealand. Mrs J. H. Whittaker, of Kimbolton Road, is spending a holiday in Auckland.
