PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Sept. 26. Much interest was taken in a “wheelbarrow Derby” held last evening, there being an attendance which was estimated at 1500. The Paliiatua Silver Band played a number of' selections in tile Memorial Square. There were 60 entrants, and the race was won by Mr K Sliarplin, who had as a passenger Mr W. Ridley. The second place was filled by Mr B. Lett, with Mr R. Carrad as passenger. The event was organised by Mr C. Smith. The annual ball of the Bush Basketball Association was held last evening, there being a large attendance. Mr R. Smith wa-s in charge of the arrangements. Mr G. H. Smith, patron of the association, presented the trophies as follow :—Senior championship shield: Rovers, with 18 points; run-ners-up, Konini, 9 points. Waratahs and Athletic ’ secured 5 points each. Miss Denise Mahoney as captain ac cepted the shield, and Miss Pattie Miller received the cup for the runners-up. Senior Yankee tournament: Rovers 1, Konini 2. Junior championship: Woodville, 18 points, 1, captain "Miss Peggy Hanaray: High School, 16 points, captain, Miss Jeanette Prussing. Convent secured 14 points. Junior Yankee tournament: High School 1.

The annual shield competitions between the Pahiatua, Woodville, and Eketahuna Eire Brigades were held yesterday afternoon. Detailed results arc as follow:—Four-men motor, draw for places: Eketahuna, time, linin 10 2-ssec, 1; AVoodville, time, Imin sec, 2; Pahiatua, time, lmin 32 2-ssec, 3. Two-men, wet: Eketahuna, 43 1-5 sec, 1. Three men, disabled hose event: Pahiatua, lmin 1 2-ssec, 1; Eketahuna, lmin 11 2-ssec, 2; Woodville, lmin 28 l-ssec, 3." The officials in charge were: Timekeepers, Messrs A. J. Fainveathcr, G. 0. O. Oxley and Deputy-Superintendent Jesson from Eketahuna; starter, Mr E. H. Lett; judges, Superintendent O’Neil (Woodville), Fireman J. Charles (Woodville), Deputy R. Stokes (Pahiatua), Fireman E, Parkes and Fireman J. Stokes. The visitors were later entertained by the members of the Pahiatua brigade.
