SHANNON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 26. The Borough Council has received seveiral replies from tramping clubs regarding the proposed track linking Mangahao dam with the road on the Eketahuna side. The clubs are in agreement with the project, which they consider quite practicable. The VVairarapa Tramping Club replied that a six-foot formed track would only be of use to trampers, stalkers, etc., and as it would not bo in use a great deal during part of ilhe year second growth would, in time, tend to obliterate it. Again, being only [used by a small section of the community, ■it is extremely unlikely that a subsidy would be granted for its building. On the other hand, if a road were formed it -would become a main highway as at present there is no link between the east and west coasts (except by the Akatarawa Road or the Manawatu Gorge, etc.) Such a scheme, it is thought, would be more favourably considered for subsidy purposes. Trampers and others would make more use of a. road as they could reach parts direct by motor transport and then sot off to their objective. An objection to a road, however, would be that the bush and other natural surroundings might be seriously destroyed in the formation and be easy of access by vandals. The Mnssoy Agricultural College arid Manawatu Tramping Clubs offered their support to the proposal, tho former suggesting that the track bo named “Richardson’s. Track” in appreciation of the fact that their late secretary, Mr Paul Richardson, was mainly instrumental in the planning and forming of the track as it exists at present, and the latter club is making representations through the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand for their support. Hie Mayor has convened a meeting of representatives from local bodies, school committees, etc., with a view to forming a local health committee for the furtherance of the health stamp campaign. Tho interest shown by members at the annual meeting of the Cricket Club, held on Tuesday evening, points to a successful season. In the absence of the president ! (Mr W. King), Mr J. Mabey presided. Owing to the unsettled living conditions > last season, the personnel of the team was continuously changing. All games were played, though sometimes with an understrength team, and a creditable performance was upheld throughout the season. Prospects for tho coming season are much brighter and players are already taking active steps towards getting tho grounds in order. Reference was made to tho loss the club had sustained in the death of coo of its keenest members, Mr W. \\ arman, the. meeting observing a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to his memory. It was resolved to ask the Borough Council lor the use of the Domain for the coming season and to approach them regarding assistance in getting the grounds in order. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr R. Hayes for generous services rendered by him last season. Officers elected for the ensuing vear were:—Patron, Mr W. Clayton: president, Mr C. Leighton; secretary, Mr R. Graham; treasurer, Mr D. Mercer; committee. Messrs Picard, Simas. Mabey, Gee K. Batt, and T. Roach; delegates, Messrs Mabey, Leighton, and Graham; captain, Mr R. Downes. Now members elected were: Messrs 11. Moore, C. Carmout, T. Hannam, and B. Maccdo.
