THE OTAKI GATHERING.

PROMISE OF GOOD SPORT.

(By “Binocular.”) The one-day spring meeting of the Otaki .Maori Racing Club will be held at Otaki to-morrow the opening event being set down for 11.45. While the fields are sonicwnat restricted in one or two instances, the. remainder are excellent and, in all respects, a great play’s racing should cventuo “ ,0 B'ack will be in splendid order alter the spell of dry weather. As has been shown at recent meetings, the presence of a number of fresh horses may tend to be an upsetting factor where form is concerned, but patrons will have some line to guide them in the majority of the events. The card to be presented is as under: — 11.45 KAFITI HACK HURDLES, of £3O. One inilo and a half.

In the past the position of the hurdles has tended towards assisting the indifferent jumper, but who can command a turn of speed. Recently, the club undertook some alterations to its property and it is meantime unknown whether the old arlangements still stand. Should (hat bo the case the prospects of Karangapai would be enhanced. Under ordinary circumstances, Red Sun, Gold Cure, and Arctic Star should dominate the betting, but should the old order 'of things prevail, strongest support may come for:

Gold Cure, Karangapai, Arctic Star. 12.25

PUHI MAIDEN PLATE, of £6O. Six furlongs.

The nicely-balanced field of 11 candidates is carded for the Puhi Maiden Plate, the majority of whom have little form to commend them. Going Gay has only to improve a little to be dangerous, while Entheos. Conversion, The Image, and Merry Knight may have friends. The favourite should come from: Going Gay, Entheos, Conversion. 1.5

Round Score heads the weights in the Katihiku Hack Handicap with his fellow Awapuni-trained candidates, Finnesko and Treasure Hunt, following at intervals of Blb and 9lb, and all three should run well. Dorado ran sufficiently well at Foxton as to indicate that he will perform creditably. A favoured trio should be: Round Score, Finnesko, Dorado. 1.50 — LING MEMORIAL STAKES HANDICAP, of £l3O. One mile and a quarter. Ruri 8 10 Sunec 7 7

Then follows the principal handicap, the form horses being Ruri, Sporting Song, and Gay Boy; but Eminent ran quite a fair race at Foxton. Chief Marionette comes back after a spell, while Miladi and Sunec also come in as freah horses. In a race which bears quite an open appearance, the elect of backers may be:

Ruri, Gay Boy, Sporting Song. 2.30 FAHIKO HACK HANDICAP, of £BO.

With two wins in two starts, Oratory has been placed on the same poundage as Sweet Music, both having 9.0. but. Oratory won so well on both occasions, that she may continue her record. The majority of the others have done little or no recent racing and backers may pick their favourite from:

Oratory, ltound Up, Sweet Music. 3 15 WAITAWA HANDICAP, of £llO. Six furlongs. Gold Mission 9 0 Hunting Lodge 8 2 Pladie 8 9 Bddyline 8 2 Beau Gallante 8 7 Lord Moutoa 7 0 The consistent Gold Mission heads the weights in the Waitawa Handicap—the open sprint—in which Beau Gallante is due to make a reappearance under silk. As the Top Gallant gelding is now trained at Otaki, his present condition in not known, but if in anything like form ho will make matters interesting. Pladie should improve on his Foxton performance, while Hunting Lodge and Body line will probably be found in the firing line when heads arc turned for home. Strongest support may possibly come for: Hunting Lodge and Bodyline. 4.0-

Thc useful field of 11 horses figures in the hack distance event, Taumau and Manawatu being on terms with 9.8, the pair being well clear of the others. However, they will not lack for friends. Chaste, Confiscation, and Earl Colossus read the best of the others. The most favoured should be: Taumau, Santoft, Chaste. 4.45 lIEMA TE AO HANDICAP, of £llO. Seven furlongs.

The day’s activities will concludo with the open seven furlongs event in which Grand Jury will make his first appearance for the season. Walton Park had an outing at Foxton and he should be improved by the race, while the Otaki course will be more to his liking. Miladi claims a, dual engagement, _ but if reserved may play a part here. Limulus has been disappointing, but it would not bo safe to dismiss her. Aiguille ran quite a good race at Foxton, while both Gold Cure and Gay Boy aro well seasoned. With plenty of room for a surprise, preferences may be for: Limulus, Gold Cure, Gay Boy.
