BYRD EXPEDITION.
NEW ZEALANDERS RETURN. SYDNEY, Sept. 24., Messrs Francis W. Smoothey and Cecil Melrose, New Zealanders who went with the Byrd Expedition to the Antarctic. reached Sydney to-day aboard the freighter Ashburton on their way home. , , , , They declared that they had had a great experience, but that the work was “tough.”
A cable on July 11 stated that the two New Zealand youths faced deportation unless the expedition’s management or others interested in the caso managed to secure for them a passage home. For a time they enjoyed sightseeing at New York, but then their pay money became exhausted. Iwo days later a spokesman for the Byrd Expedition announced that arrangements had been made for the pair to return home.
