Later today, it is said, the conference came within 1.5 cents of agreeing, but beyond that neither side was willing to will be continued under the direction of the Dej>artment of Labour in the hope of settling the strike before a shortage is felt. During the first day of the walk-out no disorders were reported. A later message states that a continuation of the strike for at least one more day came to-night, when the committee of Appalachian producers and the united mine workers, who are seeking a new wage and hour agreement, went into recess until to-morrow without reaching an agreement.
