A GOOD SEASON.

MANAWATU’S RECORD

(By “Cross Bar.”)

Manawatu’s record in representative engagements this season is one which local enthusiasts may well be proud of, although an excellent opportunity of adding to it was lost on baturday when the team which took the field at Athletic Park failed to register a win over Wellington B. While it has been publicly stated that the fixture with a xi team arranged by our delegates at the time of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union, it was far from a compliment to Alanawatu in view of the fact that Wellington A will be meeting unions winch Alanawatu have beaten. However, while Wellington can place a B team in the field capable of inflicting defeat upon us, we can hardly complain. It is now history that our record in the early stages ol the season was very far from bright, and reverses by Southern Hawke’s Bay and Bush sent local enthusiasm down to zero, although the position was puzzling in view of the standard displayed in club football. However, matters improved as we advanced, alterations m the composition of the fifteen having the desired effect, and when victories over Horowhenua, Wairarapa, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay followed in turn, local natrons smiled again. Optimism was shaken when the return meeting with Wairarapa was only productive, of a draw, but this was largely accounted for by the fact that the team had had somewhat of a battering at Napier four days previously, and were feeling the effect. A weakened side was quite sufficient to dispose of Horowhenua at the second clash, while Wanganui wore severely trounced in turn. Tlyen with victory over Wellington to complete an excellent record, hopes were shattered on Saturday. The complete record for the season is as under:— June 22.—v. Southern Hawke’s Bav, lost, 14—21. July 10.—v. Bush, lost, B—2l.8 —21. July 13.—v. Horowhenua, won. 19—14. August 7.—v. Wairarapa, won, 11—3. August 10. —v. Taranaki, won, 16— August 24.—v. Hawke’s Bay, won, 17— August 28.—v. Wairarapa, drawn, 5—5. September 7.—v. Horowhenua, won. 24 September 14.—v. AYanganui won, 25 September 21.—v. AVellington, lost, B—ls. THE CONTRIBUTORS. Contributors towards Alanawatu’s scoring account, which is 147 points for with 126 against from 10 matches, are as under:—-

32 4 1 1 16 147 PLAYERS CALLED ON. Actually, the seelctors called on 41 players during the- season, but quite a few of them made their appearance in the later stages when injuries had left temporary inroads in the ranks, and on the occasion of the inter-club championship final when the Feilding Old Boys and St. Patrick’s members in the representative team were not called upon. Only one player—K. Beard, the Oroua Downs forward—took the field on all 10 occasions. The complete record of appearances is as under: —10 games, K. Beard, 9; J.
