DIFFICULTIES OF SETTLERS.
NO LABOUR OFFERING. WELLINGTON, Sent. 25. Complaints by settlers that they were unable to secure labour were mentioned by Mr C. H. Clinkard when speaking in the financial debate. He said that practically everywhere he went in the rural districts farmers had the same complaint. They stated that they advertised for labour and received no replies at all, or if they did the applicants were quite unsuitable. The result was that the wife of the farmer and his family had to do the work when the settler was In a position to pay for the labour. Mr A. J. Stalhvorthy: I can prove that is incprrect so far as your own district is concerned. Mr H. S. S. Kyle: The position in Canterbury is as stated by the member for Rotorua. Mr H. M Rushworth: Is that not a severe indictment of conditions on the farms P Mr Clinkard: No. In the camps the men have company, they are well fed, and they don’t like leaving regular hours in order to take up farming.
