TAX ASSESSMENTS.
DEDUCTIONS SOUGHT. lleporting to a meeting of the ellington central provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, at Martun yesterday, the chairman (Mr Lloyd Hammond) said the Prime Minister had stated to a deputation that if payments of land and unemployment tax were not allowed as deductions when assessing income tax it had been due to an oversight, and the matter could readily be rectified. Of course, stated Mr Hammond, the matter was in the hands of the Minister of Finance, who had not been interviewed regarding the subject. Mr J. B. S. Dudding stated that he had' had correspondence on the subject with the Income Tax Department, who admitted that the claim was a legitimate one, but the financial situation of the country would not warrant an alteration.
Mr Hammond stated that the union was pressing for the removal of the veto', and it remained to he seen wliat action would follow the Prime Minister’s statements that the matter could be rectified.
