(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 23,

Mrs S. Roberts gave another of her most interesting and helpful talks on seasonal gardening at the Shannon Women’s Institute September meeting, held last week. Tho talk was followed with interest and tho speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Much business occupied the early part of tho meeting and members were enlightened regarding the Sarah Ann Rhodes scholarship instructress (Miss Johnson, of Massey College), who is hoping to hold classes on various useful subjects in Shannon. Enthusiastic reports of her work in other centres and the nature of her subjects for study appealed strongly to members, and it is anticipated there will h- a largo gathering at her inaugural meeting. A Competition for two sponge sandwiches was won by Mrs W. S. Jamieson, while in the points competition the results were as follow: —For best collection of spring flowers, Mrs Blaikie 1. Mrs Harpur 2, Mrs L. Satherley 3; best arrangement of spring flowers in a jar, Mrs Harpur 1. Mrs K. Mitchell 2, Mrs Aim 3; biniors, Miss J. Blaikie 1, Miss C. Burling 2. A sale stall for federation funds did orisK business. Members willingly volunteered to support the committee in the running of the tea stall at the forthcoming local sports meeting and all arrangements were made. Mrs and Miss Aim wore appointed stewards in charge of the floral entries. Next month a demonstration will be given by Mrs Waring-Taylor; there will he an play-reading, and the competition will be for the four heaviest hen eggs, not double yolked (seniors) and the best variety of cakes made from' a mixturo containing J)lb butter and 1 egg (juniors). Tho finals in the loealf golf senior and junior championships resulted in H. Wilson winning the senior, with C. Stem runnerup; ana Y. I’ope the junior, with C. Tremewan runner-up. It is expected the links will be closed after the first week of next month. A return match with Oroua. Downs was plaved at the week-end, a large number of local players making the trip and reporting a most enjoyable day. The Bowling Club have resolved to open on October 23, and the work on the greens is being pushed forward for that date. Mr IL. Hook, who has been residing in South Africa for the past four years, is intending to pay a visit to Shannon next Christmas. Mr F. H. Taylor, whose death .is reported from Stewart Island, where lie had been stationed in charge of the Presbyterian Church for the past year, was well-known locally, having been '.sole teacher at the Makerua School for many years prior to taking up church work. A large circle of friends will extend sympathy to Airs Taylor, who is a daughter of Mr J. O'Coimor, of Bailance Street.
