GOLF TOURNAMENT

THE LEGAL PROFESSION. J. GRAHAM WINS THE CUP. The “Devil’s Own” golf tournament, held by members of the legal profession over the week-end at the Manawatu Golf Club’s links at Hokowhitu, was concluded yesterday afternoon. The weather was ideal throughout, the entries well above expectations, and the course in splendid order, which made for a most successful tourney. The principal contest, the “Devil s Own” Cup was productive of a high standard of golf, the interest being enhanced by reason of the fact that quite a large number of the games did not reach finality until the home green was reached. The winner, J. Graham, of Feilding, who accounted for S. K. Siddells (Pahiatua) in the semi-final, w'ent on to annex the honours by accounting for F. J. Christensen (Marton), who had eliminated N. G. Whiteman (Masterton) in the other semi-final, both games finishing on the 18th green. The Mortgagors Relief Stakes was won by C. N. Armstrong (Wellington) with K. Kirkcaldie (Auckland) as the runnerup. In the Paupers’ Appeal Stakes, all four Semi-finalists were from Wellington, and in the final E. C. Wiren won from T. P. McCarthy. Mr G. I. McGregor ably carried out the duties of tournament secretary, while Colonel J. H. Whyte was the official starter.

At the close of play the players gathered at the clubhouse where the trophies were presented to the successful competitors by Mrs J. W. Rntherfurd, wife of the president of the Palmerston North Lew Society. The detailed results of the final day’s play, were as under: “DEVIL’S OWN” CUP.

KEEN STRUGGLES

The final of the cup was productive of a keen struggle, the issue being in doubt until Christensen failed to hole a long putt for the 3 that would have squared the match on the home green. Graham had been dormy one going to the eighteenth and both were on the green with their second shots, Christensen bping nearer the pin. Graham made the game safe when he laid his approach putt dead, and Christensen’s par 4 was not good* enough, the hole being halved. The first hole was halved in 4 but Graham lost the second when he failed with a short putt. He evened at the next. Willows was halved, and Graham took the lead at Strang’s, which he won with a nett 4 to 5. Ho also won Riverside with the assistance of another stroke and was 2 up at the turn. Coming in, Christensen won the tenth but lost Ti Ti’s where Graham did not require to use his stroke. The next two holes were halved, a weak approach by Christensen saving Barraud’s for Graham, who was 2 up and 3 to play. Christensen won the sixteenth and the seventeenth was halved, also the eighteenth, Graham taking the match 1 up. The umpire for the final was Mr J. R. Galloway. Playing against E. D. Blundell in the semi-final of the Mortgagors’ Relief Stakes, C. N. Armstrong (a 4 handicap player) reached the turn in 35. S. Iv. Siddells, although beaten in the semi-final of the principal event, had reason to be satisfied with his standard of golf throughout the tourney, his nett scores for his first five rounds being G 9, 73, 70, 68 and 68.
