RAGING NEWS

FORM AT FOXTON. WIN AND PLACE BETTING. (By “Binocular.”) Whether the win and place systorn of betting is suitablo for small meetings, is open to doubt and there arc many owners and backers who are not in favour of it. Just how far the betting system affected the returns is problematical, but the club suffered a decrease of £ISOO, a substantial drop on a turnover of less than £9OOO. The system certainly forces a bettor to play with additional capital, and while it may be argued that tbo chances of securing a dividend are increased, that is poor consolation to the person who has invested both ways without getting any return, or who suffers a loss on a second or third placing. The club was unfortunate that a field of four youngsters only contested tbo Two-Yoar-Old Handicap, for with little or no form to attract patrons, only the sum of £2OO was invested upon the machine. As was not unanticipated by Awapuni track watchers, Lavish the favourite was defeated by Dawning Light, despite the fact that the latter had not previously contested a v race (whereas Lavish had run third in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui). It was a ease of history ropeating itself, for tho Awapuni mentor, W. l’ine, did the same thing with Symcony last year. Bought at the Trentham sales for 70 guineas. Dawning Light, who is by Arausio irom Aureate, the sister to Desert Gold, promises to be a sale-ring bargain. When that good sportsman, Mr W. H. Ballinger, of Wellington, was alive, lie built great hopes in his two-year-old filly Nightlass, but bo did not live to see her win her first race. Nightlass had a narrow call from the Motuiti-trained Golden Chest in tho Maiden Raco, but as sho hung on fairly well possibly she will improve with age. Her success gave Nightmarch his first winner, and Mrs \V. 11. Ballinger, who now races Nightlass, her first win on tho turf.

While an incident which occurred in tho birdcage on the horses returning to scale after the Maiden Race had its humorous aspect, it might have been attended by serious consequences, for a breach of the rules of racing was unconsciously committed. Golden Chest, who is owned by a district member of the Maori race, was piloted by a diminutive Maori lad named Kimura, who was having his first race. On descending from the saddle an elder member of the race shook hands with the young rider and, after the horse had been unsaddled, took possession of the saddle io pilot the jockey into the weighing-in room. It might well have cost the owner the second place money and ■ the holders of 34 10s tickets a lucrative dividend. The progeny of lline Aroha have all displayed wayward habits, Arikira and Maui, two earlier members of the family,, having both been somewhat unruly at the barrier. Another edition, Rustem, made his debut in the maiden event and the clerk of the course was early deputed to look after him on the outside of the field. Holding him by tho head the pair went off slowly when the barrier rose and the clerk of the course went with Rustem for over half a furlong, but whether by choico or owing to his not being able to relinquish his hold, .is not known. . Although' now getting on in years Gold Cure retains his youthful spirit in» a remarkable manner. Last season ho proved to be quite capable of footing it with tho sprinters, and in the hurdling branch ho may go to reasonably great heights. At Wanganui he was quietly fancied for tho jumping event, but the fast fencing of doloist was probably not anticipated and iho Gold Soult gelding could not foot it with the pacemaker. At hoxlon Alan McDonald, the pilot' of Gold Cure, allowed Midacre and Karangapai, who set a fast clip, to carry him along until five furlongs from home when he ran to the front to will with something in reserve. The fast pace set by Midacre and Karangapai early had some of the othep runners “scratching” in the hurdle event, but it also got Karangapai into difficulties and he gave way at the end of six furlongs. Midacre held on till about two furlongs from home, the display of the latter being very promising for a recruit. Another who should improve in the near future is Arctic Star. In tho closing stages of the old season J übilce Song was tried over longer distances than he had been accustomed to. lhc change was not as successful as Ins connections had wished for, and the Hunting Song golding disappeared from racing for a times He returned to tho active ranks on Saturday to register a very coinfortablo win in the Moluiti Hack Handicap, it being left to Dorado to chase him home. Ihe late challenger rnado little impression on the topwoight, who was ridden very confidently out in front. Twelve months ago the ff aranaki owner, Mr A. H. Trotter, won tho Awnhou liacK Handicap ’ with Davistock and became the possessor of a handsome gold goblet. Saturday saw the David—Eumiha gcldnig win the Carnarvon Gold Gup to gam for his owner a charmingly designeu gold cup which any owner would have been proud to win Ur Trotter had reason to consider himself lucky for the .runner-up, Rompalong, had to conic round his field on the turn into the straight and he failed by only half a head to capture tho honours. At Wanganui Rompalong ran /prominently for a period in the hack distance event On the opening dav, but he stumbled when crossing tho top to lose ground at a critical stage. Saturday’s effort was a marked improvement on any of tlic thrcc-year-old s preceding performances. Luck in the running plays a big part in a race and Fcrsen, the favourite for the Carnarvon Gold Cup, was not favoured in that respect. • After starting from _ fairly wide out, his rider took up a position on tho rails behind tho leading division. Going along tho back Lapel got up next the rails and thereafter the pair wore completely boxed in. Fcrsen looked _to bo in particularly good order and his winning turn will como. The Foxton course, by reason of its turning nature and its sandy soil—which tends to shift under tho flying hooves—docs not suit all horses, and some well-baekcd fancies in the Awahou Hack Handicap failed to fulfil anticipations. On tho strength of his showing at Marton and his recent track work. Taumau was rnado favourite for tho event, but the big striding gelding after running into the lead early, compounded on the turn two furlongs from homo. Probably tho course as much as anything else heat him. The well-bred Night. Raid—Mandanc mare Evasion has hardly been a good racing proposition for her Palmerston North owner, Mr N. Blackmore, although in private she has given considerable promise. In racing with tho colours up she has displayed an inability to begin quickly enough and lias invariably to come from behind. Two furlongs from home in tiro Awahou Hack Handicap she was whipping in the field, and her rider had to push her along and round tho outside to reach Hie firing line. She finished on very gamely to dead heat with Chaste for second, but she could not reach Wyndale, who registered her second successive win to pay a dividend of substantial dimensions. Hunting Lodge won the Robinson Handicap in good style, tho effort marking a distinct improvement on her form in the intervening period since she scored at the Levin fixture. Awapuni stables went closo to filling first and second placings, it being only in tho last stride that Glenvane headed off Catalogue, who ran particularly well for a big striding sort. . Bazaino, although a little slower than Bodyline and Lord Motuoa to leave the barrier, forged to tho front to come across the top with a winning load. He then commenced to weaken and was finally beaten into fourth place. It was a disappointing performance and it would scorn that the five furlong's distance is still the furthest he can go-

OTAKI MEETING. • CLOSING OF ACCEPTANCES. A final reminder is given owners and trainers that acceptances for all events at tho spring meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club, to be held on Saturday next, close with the secretary at Otaki to-night at S o’clock.
