CANADIAN POLICE
VERY FEW MOUNTED. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police may drop the word “mounted” from its title, according to Sir James MacBrien, Commissioner of the R.C.M.P. Twice already Canada’s famous roving constabulary has changed its name and once' more it may be altered to conform with changing conditions. “When I joined as a recruit it was known as tlie North-West Mounted Police,” Sir James said. “Later the name was changed to the Royal North West Mounted Police, and it is sad to realise that our name may again be changed to drop the word ‘mounted’ from the title.”
He explained that out of the force, of 2900 only 300 men are mounted. “We have more dogs than horses, and most of our men travel in automobiles, aeroplanes, and boats. In future recruits to the force will not be trained in horsemanship. Instead they will spend time learning the scientific aspects of the work,” he said.
