REFUSAL OF BROADCAST

POSITION EXPLAINED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 12. The broadcasting authorities last week refused a request to broadcast a speech by the Lady Bledisloe to a gathering of women’s organisations. On Thursday, the Lady Bledisloe addressed a meeting of women’s organisations of Christchurch arranged by the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, and permission was obtained from Her Excellency to have the address broadcast. The proposition was made to the authorities of 3YA, Christchurch, but they declined to put the speech on the air.

Mr J. Mackenzie, station director of 3YA, said this evening that there was an interesting story behind the incident. One woman who was concerned with tlie arrangements told the women’s organisation that the station would be glad to arrange for the broadcast. Nothing was said to -the station, however, but the women went on with their part of the arrangements. The day before the Lady Bledisloe was to speak a request was received by telephone for a broadcast to be made. Mr Mackenzie said it was then too late to make any arrangements because the hands of the station were full. The incident had created a good deal of trouble, said Mr Mackenzie, because many women’s organisations in other parts of the country were advised by telegraph to listen for the broadcast. He hoped that the Lady Bledisloe on her next visit to Christchurch would consent to broadcast a message to the women of New Zealand.
